About Hôtel Universel de Rivière-du-Loup
Purchased in 1992 by Mr. Gilles Lortie, Hôtel Universel in Rivière-du-Loup was born out of a desire to breathe new life into a landmark establishment in the region. Acquired following foreclosure by the Laurentian Bank, the hotel had originally opened its doors in December 1973 under the leadership of Mr. Raymond Malenfant. Since then, our establishment has continued to evolve to meet the growing expectations of guests seeking comfort, quality, and unique experiences.
Over the years, we have undertaken several major phases of modernization and expansion. From 2005 to 2006, the addition of 51 "super comfort" rooms brought our total capacity to 170 rooms.
Proud of our roots and deeply committed to our community, we prioritize local resources and labor in all our projects. Our environmental commitment has also been demonstrated through the installation of an energy-efficient heating and cooling system — an initiative recognized in 2009 with a Sustainable Development Award at the Bas-Saint-Laurent Tourism Grand Prix. That same year, the hotel received the special Kéroul award for its accessibility and efforts to accommodate guests with reduced mobility.
In 2011, we undertook a complete exterior makeover: a new façade, three new meeting rooms, landscaping, and redesigned parking. These efforts were followed by renovations to our pool area and public restrooms.
Our spirit of innovation was on full display in 2013, our 40th anniversary year, with the launch of the Excellence section and the SpaNordik wellness center. Winning the national gold award in the 150+ rooms category in 2014, this development also led to the creation of 25 additional jobs.
Our growth continued in 2018 with the addition of 80 Club Privilege rooms, including a luxurious penthouse. Between 2019 and 2021, we renovated our 119 original rooms, 51 Prestige rooms, and main lobby, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to guest comfort and excellence.
In 2022, we installed fast-charging stations for electric vehicles, furthering our commitment to the energy transition. Then, in 2023, we completely transformed our restaurant with an open kitchen concept, a second floor with lounge and private dining rooms, a large-capacity elevator, and modernized washroom facilities.
The former Italian restaurant, Le Rialto Bistro, has been reinvented as an adult-friendly entertainment space featuring pool tables, darts, foosball, video lottery, popcorn, and a full bar — everything you need for a fun and friendly night out.
Finally, our pool area was entirely redesigned in 2023 with the addition of water games, making it ideal for families.
Hôtel Universel in Rivière-du-Loup is more than just a hotel: it's a destination where comfort, innovation, fine dining, and well-being come together — right in the heart of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region.
